Launched in 2003, Fit for the Future is an ambitious, long-term strategy designed to bring together local organisations and residents to improve health and reduce health inequalities in Barnsley. It was recognised that any timescale for reducing health inequalities was likely to be measured in decades, rather than years and that the strategy would evolve over time. Fit for the Future is now moving into the second phase of that evolution process.
There have been some measurable improvements in the health of people in Barnsley since 2003. Health is improving but we want it to get better, quicker. Fit for the Future is proposing that now is the time to focus in on some of the more challenging areas of health that face Barnsley. We are putting the call out to local organisations to not only recognise that health is everybody’s business but to really act upon it and rise to the challenge.
Throughout June, we will be giving you the opportunity to help to shape the new strategic approach. For those of you who have been part of the journey with us over the past seven years, you will see that we are proposing to focus in on those areas where improving health will make a real difference to people’s lives, such as stopping smoking and responsible drinking and where local partners can make a significant contribution. Some of the old elements have not been included in the new phase and that’s because, in the main, those areas are now established, allowing the emphasis to be redirected.
For those of you new to Fit for the Future, we would appreciate your insight into our proposed approach. Tell us what you can do to support Barnsley people to achieve better health.
