 SF14249 Stop Smoking

Stopping smoking isn't easy, but when you see the drastic improvements to your life and health, you'll want to set your action plan going as quickly as you can.

Why stop?

There are many reasons why people choose to stop smoking including health concerns, financial reasons , to protect and/or support family members, and social reasons. Most people will attempt to stop for one or more of these reasons:

  • Financial: People often forget the long term cost of smoking. For example, if you spend £5 a day on smoking, over year that can add up to over £1,800. This money could be set aside to help motivate you to stop. Calculate how much you can save using the Cost Calculator - click here.

  • Family: By stopping smoking you can motivate and encourage other family members to quit too. It’s an individual’s decision but when a smoker sees someone else close to them succeed at kicking the habit, it often gives them the confidence they need to give it a try. People often choose to stop smoking for their loved ones so that they can live longer, healthier lives and see their children and grandchildren grow up.

  • Pregnancy: There are few better times to stop smoking than when you are pregnant both for you and for your baby. Find out more about Smoking and Pregnancy here.

  • Social: Nowadays most people do not smoke and the introduction of the smoking ban has helped people to socialise smokefree.

  • Health: There are many health benefits as a result of stopping smoking such as reduced risk of developing illness, disability or death caused by cancer, heart or lung disease, improved fertility levels and chance of a healthy pregnancy and baby, improved breathing and general fitness.

  • Your own reasons: Knowing your own motivations for wanting to stop smoking is the first stage in preparing for your quit attempt. It may be just one great reason or a number of smaller but significant ones. Whatever the reasons, try to keep focused on these throughout your quit attempt.
